Social Studies Test Retake Requirements for Ch. 18
If you are going to retake the test over Ch. 18 , you need to do a brief outline of each of the lessons in the chapter. There are 5 lessons and each, 18.2-18.7 must be outlined. The outline can be brief, but informative and should focus on the main idea of each lesson. It can be typed or handwritten. If you hand write it I have to be able to read it, otherwise, I will not accept it. You must also have a parent sign this outline stating that you have read the chapter and studied for at least one hour. You may take the test again anytime between Jan. 28th and Feb. 2nd, but not before you have the outline and reading done and outline signed. You must make arrangements with me prior to taking the test. I give retakes during lunches, before and immediately after school.
How Can I Help My Student With Social Studies?
1. Read each night for 10 to 15 minutes each night from the text book.
2. Discuss what your student has read. Relate it to something from your life or theirs.
3. Quiz them on the vocabulary words. They are the words in blue in the text.
4. Review their workbook with them and check the quality of their answers.
5. Have them watch the video clips I put on this site.
6. Visit this site often.

For practice, on the Bill of Rights, you should go to http://billofrightsinstitute.org click on games and play any of them that are about The Bill of Rights.
10/15 We are working on Chapter 10, The Bill of Rights. Students are working in groups on learning about the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. I have divided the students into 4 groups that corispond to lessons 10.3 - 10.6. The groups used T3 (ask them what T3 means) as a reading strategy to help them understand what they are reading. In the groups, students are dissecting the amendments and putting them into plain terms that 8th graders would understand. They are illustrating the amendments and telling how the amendments relate to them/us. On Monday, each group will present their poster to the class and "teach" the class about their amendments. Once this has been done, the groups have written short quizzes to give to their classmates to determine whether or not the class understands what they taught them. It will be a great teaching and learning experience for all!!
Once the poster project is done, you need to do pages 64-67 in your workbooks. These pages will be due next Wednesday or Thursday depending on when I see you. Currently, I am planning your test for next Wed. & Thu. as well so be ready on those days unless I tell you otherwise.
Students Not Attending School - Please be reading Ch 10 and do workbook pages 64-67. Also, please take any 2 of the 4 cases from pages 68-71 in the workbook and answer the questions at the bottom of the pages. I know the questions are for groups, but try your best to do them on your own. I can send Ch. 10 tests home when you feel you are ready. Same for test study guides. Just let me know. Hope you are doing well : )
10/3 - 2,3, and 6th hours, workbook pages 54-59 are due either Monday or Tuesday depending on when I see them. 5th hour, your vocabulary words are due Monday. 2, 3, and 6th hours, REMEMBER YOU HAVE A CHAPTER TEST ON WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY DEPENDING ON WHEN I SEE YOU.

9/30 We have started Chapter 9 this week. The chapter focuses on the Constitution and the 3 branches of government: Legislative, Executive and Judicial. Everything we have done so far has been in class so no homework. Students are working in groups, reading the lessons from the chapter and then answering questions from cards from the following topics: 3 Branches of Gov't, The Amendment Process, Checks & Balances and The Federal Process. The cards they are using stay in class so there is no homework............yet. If on Wed. and Thu. students don't finish, I will find a way for them to have the cards available for finishing the assignment at home. The next test will be Wed. and Thu. Oct. 8 and 9. Please have your student read and re-read the chapter at home. Study with them if you can and discuss some of the material, it will help them prepare for the test. Thank You for your involvement!! : )
9/24 - Chapter 8 test. Tomorrow, the test will be taken by the 2nd and 6th hours. If you plan to retake the test please read the requirements above.

9/16/14 - We are studying the Constitution and Articles of Confederation at this time. Today and tomorrow classes will be working on workbook assignments for Chapter 8, lessons 1 - 12, pages 48-51. We are reading the lessons in groups and working through the workbook pages in groups also. On Monday and Tuesdy, I will go over the workbook pages with the students and provide answers. This means that students need to have the pages done at that time.
IF you have been absent during any of the days both last week and this, you are responsible for having Chapter 8 read and the workbook done from page 47 through page 51 by Monday, September 22 and Tuesday, September 23.
Today I gave out a study guide for the Chapter 8 test. The test will be given Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
9/10/14-Today and tomorrow, we will be finishing our Appalachian Trail video. We have done a map activity of the United States where students identified landforms such as rivers, mountains, plains etc. In order to better understand these features and how they caused hardship for those who ventured west, we are going to be composing a journal/diary of experiences as if the students are settlers from the late 1700's. As we watch sellected video of the landforms, students will be keeping their fictiional diary. My hope is that seeing these obstacles will create a better understanding of the fortitude these early settlers demonstrated.
We also began our first lesson in Chapter 8 of the text. We read page 103 and compared an activity we did Monday and Tuesday to the Articles of Confederation. These comparisons were written in the student's workbooks on page 47. I am expectine that their first Ch. test will be the week of September 22. Stay tuned, this date could change depending on how lessons progress.
Important - Social Studies students need to check this web site every day. Sometimes twice a day! This is where I will post assignments, give dates of special projects, and in general keep you posted on anything and everything relating to 8th Grade Social Studies. Forensics students should not need to be as diligent about checking the site. If an assignment is posted here, you are responsible for it. In this day and age, posting on the board is as out of date and my wardrobe. So please make a habit out of checking this page, it is your responsibility.
